The Sustainable Product Initiative

On March 30 2022, the European Commission will present the Sustainable Products Initiative (SPI). The initiative is a flagship of the EU’s Green Deal and a key part of the European Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP).

The SPI will form the basis of all future product legislation within the EU and set rules linked to product design, (in a broadened Ecodesign regulation), requirements for information sharing, (with a digital product passport), and incentives and measures for circular business models. The proposals included in the SPI will be important for future product design, production processes, business models and will lead to new consumption patterns.

Swedish Enterprise and its member organisations support the initiative and have, since the EU action plan [MJ1] [JS2] was presented, engaged with the SPI, with the aim of contributing constructively to the drafting of the bill[MJ3] [JS4] . Below, you will find our recently developed positions on the broadening of the Ecodesign Directive, digital product passports, Substances of Concern that hamper recycling, as well as our previous positions on SPI and CEAP.
